Basically, these schools divide piano music (or whatever instrument you're learning) into difficulty levels ranging from preparatory (RCM) or grade 1 (ABRSM) up to grade 10 (grade 8 for ABRSM). Beyond that point are the diploma levels.

It is essential to mention that piano grades have the same structure from 1-8; therefore, if pupils decide to skip, they will only experience material that is a bit more difficult than in previous levels. All in all, based on the comments of past candidates, it is completely normal to skip at least one or two levels before Practical Piano Grade 5.

By this stage you should be playing at a Grade 8 (ABRSM) level or beyond. You should have no issues sightreading pieces around three or four grades below your playing level.
